Ronde de Bordeaux and Hardy Chicago Figs

This year I planted my ronde and hardy chicago fig trees in the ground so they can grow bigger.  Planting in pot require a lot of watering and if you forget to water then your figs will get damage.  But now I will have to worry how to they will survive the cold winter.  Anyway, I'm happy with this year harvest. This year hardy chicago is doing very well and some figs are larger than last year.  My kids and I love these yummy figs!!!

HI,

What do you have tied over your Hardy Chicago figs? Does it protect them well from birds and squirrels?

Thanks

There are a lot of birds, bees, squirrel, and sometime stink bugs in my area and they always damage my figs.. The regular bird nest didn't protect my figs so I sewed *some screen mesh to protect them. They worked great and no bee can stink or eat my figs...not much flies either. I only start wrapping the figs once they start to swell and change color...(about to ripe). I think I got the screen mesh from homedepot where they sell then in a roll. I used a larger needle for the yarn and sewed the sizes together and leave an open where I can pull on the yarn and close it so nothing can get in. If you're lazy to sew, then use a stabler to stable the sizes together. I'm planning to make more next year for all my figs and also protect other fruits.

Thanks for sharing your creative method for protecting your figs.

I will give it a try on a couple of my plants. I can't sew, so I will take your advice on the stapler.

Hi Vic,

I got my fig trees from http://www.treesofjoy.com/. I also sell some fig forum members sell their cuttings on ebay. I might sell some of the cuttings on ebay during the spring too.

Hi Kristy,

Your fig trees look Great! Do you feed them any fertilizer? How did the fig trees fare this winter? I live in Richmond, and have three figs in ground..they survived but pretty much lose the older wood and grow from the bottom. Did you have to protect yours in winter?

Thanks-Lisa
