Tropical Fruits in Homestead, FL

On our way to Key West, we stopped by Homestead to pick up some tropical fruits. We were lucky to find a longan grove which sell longan for super cheap compared to the supermarkets or local fruit stands. They also sell other tropical fruits such as rambutan, june plum, dragon fruit, guava, other fruits that was in season. I would say this longan grove is a wholesale for the retailers. They also have vegetables for sale in bulk. We got 10 lbs of longan and 5 lbs rambutan for Key West and then went to another fruit stand for different variety of mangoes. Then before we get back home we stopped by the longan groves again and got 60 lbs of longan for family. :) We will definitely stop by this place again when we go to Florida. This was a great trip!

Got some sugar apples from the fruit stand.

These are the fruits we got for Key West. These lasted 5 days....hehehe

We found that Robert is Here fruits were more expensive than other other fruit stand. Other fruit stand sell their mango for $2.00 /lb and sugar apple for $4.95/ lb. Robert is Here sell their mango for $2.25-$2.50 / lb and sugar apple for $6.95 / lb. Even all the other fruits were more expensive compared to other fruit stand.

Yes, it was part of our vacation. Our final designation was Key West. So we bought all the fruits and then headed to Key West. Then on the way back we bought a whole lot more to share with family. My brother can eat 30 lbs of longan all by himself!

I don't really know the address of this longan groves as I found it accidentally. If you first find
Robert is Here fruit stand in Homestead and then from there use your GPS to go to Fruit and Spice, you will see the longan groves in between. I'll check my GPS and see if there is the house number.

Robert is here rapes his customers with the exorbitant prices he charges for his produce. I guess he just makes it convenient for people to shop there. He grows most of his fruits and/or buys them wholesale from the distribution centers located on Krome Av. so there is no reason for the extreme prices.

I agree. Robert is Here fruits are too expensive. That was why I didn't get much from them. I only wanted atemoya at that time but they didn't have them. Now I know another area in Homestead for fruits and a lot lot cheaper!

Hi,

I see you have a lot of tropical fruits and I don't know how you could keep them in your state. I live in Texas and was wondering if you could share your secrets of taking care of them..Also I have tried making "che banh lot" many times and still have not been successful..I would love to learn from you on how to do it correctly..Mine obviously didn't turn out right..

Chalene,

If you live in Texas then it's easier to grow the tropical fruit trees than PA. At least you don't get snow. There is really no secret on growing them. I only use potting soil, mix with some perlite and peat moss. I water the trees when they are dried on the top soil. I fertilized them with a slow release fertilizer and used half dose of Miracle Grow fertilizer.

I move my trees in early October because some trees can not stand temperature lower than 50F with no sun.
